but it may not arrive in time for the storm now moving into that area. public works department say they do have enough road salt for now. they stocked up months ago although it is going quickly. and the latest storm in the plains could dump up to a foot of snow in the northeast. >> and it is not good for travellers at all. >> good morning and happy new year, it will be a cold and snowy start to 2014 for many locations. we start with snow arriving across the plains into the midwest and great lakes. into areas like detroit, chicago, back into omaha. and this snow is set to spread off to the east, the upper low disturbance tracking through the day. late thursday and friday, snow will break out along the i-95 corridor here in particular, looking for heavy snow in southern new england, potentially blizzard conditions into friday and saturday night. and we're looking for a band of three to six inches stretching

framework agreement in which the middle east and palestinians can agree on. but one spokesperson said that kerry doesn't expect a breakthrough this week. some of the topics are jerusalem. and still too early to say whether the former race car driver will recover. schumacher hit his head while skiing in the french alps. and is in an induced coma. he was wearing a helmet when he fell, and it may have saved his life. and after two suicide bombings in russia, while security at the winter olympics next month may be tight they showed that getting to the games may be dangerous. >> reporter: as the seconds tick down to the sochi games, they promise they will be the safest in history, but it is seriously being questioned. two deadly attacks in two days

have shaken that promise by president vladimir putin who had personally taken charge of the games and says he will take no chances. in his address he vowed to pursue the terrorists until their total annihilation. they searched multiple buildings, but that has done little to calm the fears of team usa, many say they're concerned about the attacks just 38 days before the game. this is exactly the scenario that russia wanted to avoid before sochi, and despite the crackdowns, russia knows all too well the mayhem that can be brought by its determined enemies. london. pope francis ended 2013 with his first new year's eve mass. the pope used the prayer service to urge people to reflect on the year gone by. he asked them to think about whether they spent the year on

their own interests or helping others. after the service, the pope went into the square to greet the well-wishers and check out a live nativity scene. well, he is not a pope but new york has a new mayor for the first time in 12 years, bill de blasio replaces michael bloomberg. the 52-year-old democrat is joined by his wife and children and told the crowd this is the beginning of the road we'll travel together. >> so this obviously was a very small and intimate ceremony he had in his home. but there will be others, and an official inauguration that will be presented by the president. >> and instead of -- >> former mayor michael bloomberg as of just a couple of hours ago, look at that. >> i wonder what he will wind up doing. >> i don't know, maybe he will

year's eve party in the world is in times square. but long before the confetti fell here in new york city the festivities started across the globe. bright and beautiful. 2014 starting with a bang. the new year's celebrations began yesterday morning. auckland, new zealand, among one of the first places to say good-bye to 2013. another stunning show from australia where more than a million people gathered to watch the fireworks display over the sidney opera house to the extravagant crowds in shanghai singing. in scotland, this is not a one-night celebration. their new year's festival lasts three days. >> it is really magical. >> reporter: and here in the u.s., the giant peach that

dropped at midnight in atlanta had some company this year. while in mobile, alabama, they rang in the new year with a 600 pound moon pie. and of course, here in new york? the traditional confetti and kisses, as the waterford crystal ball dropped at midnight ringing in 2014 from the crossroads of the world. and all of those revelers braved from serious cold last night. at midnight it felt like temperatures in the teens. muhammad and diana back to you. all right, marcy, thank you. it feels even colder in the upper midwest because it is even colder. the mercury in duluth hit 21 below yesterday, and with the wind chill it felt like it was 40 below. yet there was a strange sight coming off lake superior and that is because the water temperature is so much warmer than the air temperature.

and with the snow on the ground and more on the way there is something you don't want to hear at a hardware store, we're out of salt. the stores were bare at the hardware store, but because of the storm they ordered more but no idea when it will arrive. the local stores are stocked up, though. and crews will be busy right across the northern third of the country once again. >> yes, another punishing storm could interfere with holiday travellers yet again. let's get the latest from accu weather's jim dickey. good morning. >> good morning, across the country we're seeing snowfall from the great lakes in the ohio valley, back into the plains, piling up in many locations, including omaha and chicago, into the detroit area and then showers along the gulf coast here, too. so slow travel in these areas as we head to the late part of the week. the low pressure forming along the coast, bringing significant pressure. the heavier snow could be in new england, a foot-plus in some

locations, back to you, diana and muhammad. all right, jim dickey, thank you. and evacuation orders have been lifted following a disastrous freight train explosion. the mayor of castleton is calling on the nation to do more on the nation's growing shipment of oil by rail. and the legal fight is not over this morning for a california teen declared brain dead after having her tonsils removed. the family of 13-year-old jahi mcmath says that the facilities are willing to take her if she has surgery first, but the facilities are refusing to allow an outside doctor to perform the procedure, saying jahi is legally dead. her family believes she can be revived. there is some improvement reported for michael schumacher but it may not be enough. the veteran race car driver suffered a brain injury this week in the french alps.

he has had a second surgery now but doctors are not saying what his chances are now. schumacher retired last year and turns 45 on friday. and former first lady barbara bush is in a texas hospital being treated for early signs of pneumonia. mrs. bush is described as having respiratory-related issues. her family says she is in great spirits and receiving fantastic care. and millions of americans living with alzheimer's disease, researchers say a daily dose of vitamin e could help slow the disease. it gives them help to perform simple tasks such as getting dressed, bathing and making meals. the study involves more than 600 older veterans. and now, wrapping up with a big chill and thrill. >> the hearty souls of all ages

welcome back on this new year's day. a 9-year-old southern california boy has something to brag about when he is asked what he did over his holiday break. >> tyler armstrong is believed to be the youngest person to climb south america's tallest mountain, and the reason he did it makes this hour the favorite story of the day! >> reporter: while most children were opening their christmas presents, tyler armstrong was scaling south america's tallest mountain to give to children who can't walk. >> i w was worth it for christmas. >> reporter: this 9-year-old from california climbed the mountain in ten days, up 22,000

feet, all to raise money to cure the crippling muscle disease that affects nearly 3,000 boys worldwide, including tyler's friend who welcomed him home. >> a lot of people are just happy to walk, and that really provides a lot of hope for us. >> to be a 9-year-old and have a big heart like that kind of makes me want to cry. >> reporter: during this climb it is believed tyler set a new record. >> i'm the youngest person to climb this mountain. >> reporter: on a day when temperatures reached negative 19 degrees, his first call was to his mother back home. >> i just could not sleep. tyler calls me and says hi, mom, merry christmas and i was just so excited. i started to cry knowing he was safe. >> reporter: tyler is no stranger to climbing, he has climbed multiple mountains and is physically fit. >> i should have worked out harder to keep up with him. >> reporter: the adventures have always been tyler's idea, his
